Frequently asked questions

If you already have an nbn connection, your phone line will be ready to use once you’ve connected your Telstra Smart Modem. Simply plug your phone handset into the modem and start making calls. If you’re a Telstra customer and not yet connected to the nbn, you can upgrade to the nbn in a few easy steps.

You'll still be able to make calls normally through your phone, but you'll need to plug it into the back of your modem, not the wall. The calls will connect via the nbn network.

When there is a power failure, your landline may not work because the nbn network needs power. But it WILL work if you have:

  • A Fixed Wireless connection and have chosen to retain your existing copper phone line, or
  • Fibre to the Premises with a battery back-up unit, which maintains power to the nbn network.

In most areas, Telstra’s copper phone network has been replaced by the nbn network.

If you live in an area with nbn and you want a landline, you’ll need to have the nbn connected - if you don’t already. Once you’re connected to the nbn, you can still choose a phone-only plan if you don’t want internet.

If you or someone living with you has a life-threatening medical condition and is at risk without access to a working landline, you could be eligible for Priority Assistance. With this service you’ll receive prioritised service connection and fault repair for your Telstra telephone line if it has a fault, and you can’t access another working phone. Find out if you’re eligible for Priority Assistance.

Our phone plan and our nbn plans all come with unlimited standard local, national, and mobile calls included at no extra cost. You can’t remove them from your plan, but you don't need to make use of them either.

Your phone number will stay the same. However once you switch to the nbn any landlines you do have won't work. That's why all our nbn plans come with a phone line at no extra cost. Your new phone line will run over your nbn connection, through your Telstra Smart Modem.

Yes, once you switch to a new Telstra land line or nbn plan, any previous contract you have with us will end. If you’re coming from another provider, we'll take care of that for you too. Check with your old provider incase they have any early termination charges.

Yes, if you already have a landline phone number, you can keep it when you take up a new phone plan or nbn with a phone plan with us.

As an eligible customer, concession card holders can receive a monthly discount off their plan and also receive a waiver on late payment fees and fee-free payment options.

To determine your eligibility for this offer, we will need your Centrelink Customer Reference Number/File number. By providing us with your details, you authorise us to use these details to check your concession card status with the relevant government body to determine your eligibility for the concession offer.

If you change plans, cancel your plan or no longer have a valid eligible concession card, you may no longer be eligible to receive the discount.  We may also withdraw this offer at any time and the discount will no longer be applied.

Important

An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan.

The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™ tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. In some cases, the nbn™tier figures and the typical busy period speeds are similar. Find out more about speeds on the nbn network with Telstra.

Plan prices

Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons. We won't refund any money you've already paid and you'll need to pay out any remaining hardware or accessories in full when you cancel.

Service Availability

Services not available to all areas or premises.

Installation

Standard installation includes self-installation of your modem, eligibility criteria applies. Extra charges apply for non-standard installation of Telstra and NBN Co equipment and for premises in new developments.

New Development Charge

If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn access network, you may be charged a new development fee to connect your premises to the network. If applicable, we will invoice that charge to you.

Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional install of Telstra or nbn co equipment and for premises in new developments.

Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network.

Medical security alarms, lift phones and fire indicator panels
