Getting up close on projects makes the difference

Have you ever considered working in tech, and perhaps are curious about what a day in the life may be like? Of course, tech is a large domain so there may be huge variances in what a typical day looks like, but here’s my story as a DevOps engineer.
A day in the life
A typical day for me is busy but exciting and it involves resolving issues. That’s the bottom line. Tickets are assigned to me, and I have to resolve whatever challenge comes up. When I first began my graduate journey here, there were lots of catch ups and meetings which allowed me to build my network within the organisation and get a sense of the place. I discovered there were lots of opportunities to showcase work, allowing me to get up close to projects that other teams were working on. I got to see what they accomplished and heard about their journeys . Hearing about these projects and the backstory really helped to make everything more tangible for me.
A little about me
I started at Telstra in the 2022 Graduate Program. My background lies in software development and my current role is as a Associate Domain Engineer. Throughout my graduate journey, I’ve come across a huge range of technologies and tools which have been great in helping me identify and then choose my career pathway. I enjoy the DevOps culture here and I’ve been able to dip my toes in Agile, CICD (which stands for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery), Test Automation and Deployment.
All of this has come together to give me such a fantastic experience and I feel so proud and happy to kickstart my career at Telstra.
But if you ask me, the best thing about working here is the culture around work-life and the assurance that everything has its place and there’s a balance and order at play. Every member of a team or a group is incredibly supportive when it comes to work, and I’ve felt guided throughout my journey here. I enjoy the regular catch ups, team lunches, countless internal events, these touchpoints keep us connected with each other.
Opportunities galore!
Telstra is able to offer such a wide range of opportunities across various technologies. There’s Artificial Intelligence, 5G, Software Defined Networks, Internet of Things and much more. I feel fortunate to be working on a mission that involves an end-to-end software development life cycle. I managed to get into this project right from the start and expect to be involved until completion. So this means I get exposed to software development, testing, production deployment and more. It’s been an incredible journey in this graduate program, and I’ve felt my confidence level rise. To be completely honest, I felt empowered by the end of my graduate program.
Post-Graduate Life
The graduate roll-off experience and transitioning from a structured learning environment to a more independent, professional setting brings a mix of challenges and opportunities. This can be daunting initially but ultimately fosters growth and self-reliance. Building professional relationships with colleagues, mentors, and industry experts becomes essential. These connections can provide support, advice, and opportunities for career advancement. Successfully completing tasks and projects, especially those you're passionate about, gives is highly rewarding.
In my post-Graduate permanent position, I am immersed in an Agile culture, focusing on software development and DevOps tasks. I work independently on various aspects of a project, from planning to execution. Recently, I successfully delivered and showcased the first phase of a significant project, earning appreciation and recognition from both my peers and leaders. This role has allowed me to refine my skills in both development and operational workflows, ensuring smooth integration and deployment processes.
In my career with Telstra, I am most looking forward to contributing to innovative projects that leverage cutting-edge technology. I am eager to collaborate with talented professionals and learn from their expertise. Enhancing and exploring my skills in a dynamic and supportive environment by working across different areas and domains excites me. I aim to make a meaningful impact on the company’s growth and success. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about the opportunities for professional development and career advancement within Telstra.
