International Roaming

Your passport to staying connected when you travel

Heading overseas? International Roaming Day Pass is just the ticket for keeping in touch with family and friends while you’re holidaying overseas.

What is International Roaming?

International Roaming means you can travel abroad while continuing to use your mobile service in eligible destinations. No SIM swapping required to use data or to call and text with your Australian mobile number.

Unless already switched off, International Roaming and Day Pass will be automatically enabled on all mobile plans.  Manage your notifications, data usage and other International Roaming settings such as disabling roaming all on the My Telstra App.

How does International Roaming Day Pass work?

Once enabled on your mobile service, an International Roaming Day Pass will activate the moment your service is switched on and  used  in an eligible destination outside of Australia.

Your International Roaming Day Pass will expire for:

  • Upfront Plans 24 hours from your service being used
  • Non-Upfront Plans at 11.59pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)

Day Pass charges apply for the days when your service is used overseas to make or receive calls, send SMS, or if data is used, including background data usage. Receiving an SMS will not trigger your Day Pass.

So, once you’re back in Australia, you can leave your International Roaming Day Pass switched on and you won’t be charged.

Notifications

We’ll send you SMS notifications free of charge so you can keep track of your usage.
We’ll let you know when you’ve used 50%, 85% and 100% of your included Day Pass and Data Top-Up data allowance.

When using data at our Pay-As-You-Go rates, we’ll send you an SMS every time you use $100 worth of data.

Other ways to access International Roaming

Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG)

Customers with Non-Upfront Plans can use International Roaming on a PAYG basis in over 200 destinations.

When you, arrive, we’ll send you an SMS, advising the rates you’ll pay.

It’s our responsibility to let you know that PAYG means your costs will be significantly higher - $3 for every MB of data your service uses. To give you an idea of how quickly costs can escalate, this is around 1.5MB for every minute of social media time.

To avoid bill shock after you return home, deselect ‘International Roaming’ in the My Telstra App. You can also use your phone abroad by removing your Telstra SIM card and buying a local Telco SIM, or simply tapping into local Wi-Fi hotspots.

PAYG is not available to customers on Upfront Mobile Plans.

Pre-Paid International Roaming Packs

Purchase a Pre-Paid International Roaming Pack and keep in touch with data, calls and SMS while overseas, across 38 eligible countries.

Choose a Pack with the data and expiry time to suit your itinerary.

Availability

International Roaming is not available in all countries and destinations are subject to change. If the destination you're travelling to is not listed in the Pay-As-You-Go rates, it means you can't use your Telstra service to roam there.

In the listed destinations voice calls, SMS, MMS, and data services may not be available with all operators. The availability of voice calls, SMS, MMS, and data services are dependent on a number of factors including your destination, the participating operator in that destination and the device you use.

Pay-As-You-Go Rates

VoLTE International Roaming

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) lets you make phone calls using data.

VoLTE will increasingly be required to make or receive phone calls (including emergency calls) when roaming abroad. To ensure you can make calls while roaming you must have a device that is capable of supporting VoLTE roaming.

To use VoLTE when using your phone abroad in eligible countries requires the device to have VoLTE roaming capability. Not all VoLTE handsets have this capability. The handsets that can be used for roaming using VoLTE can be different to devices that can be used for VoLTE calling in Australia.

In order to make an emergency call while overseas, it is important that your device also supports VoLTE Emergency Calls. If your device doesn’t support VoLTE Emergency Calls, and there is no 3G network coverage available in your location in the country you’re using your device, you will not be able to make an emergency call, even though you may have 4G or 5G coverage.

VoLTE International Roaming capable devices

The devices below are VoLTE International Roaming and VoLTE Emergency Call tested and capable devices that Telstra has launched prior to 1 July 2022. In addition, every handset/tablet that Telstra have launched since 1 July 2022 that supports VoLTE also supports VoLTE International Roaming and VoLTE Emergency Calls. For any further information, please refer to our  Technical Assistance.

Travelling overseas with dual SIM

If you’re using dual SIM (multiple services on one device), be aware of your primary and secondary number settings. Either mobile number could potentially incur International Roaming charges.

When travelling overseas with a device that has more than one service installed, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with how dual SIM works on your particular device to stay in control of your usage and roaming costs. You may already be using dual SIM in Australia, or you may create a dual SIM set up while overseas if you add a local SIM on the same device as your existing Telstra service.

You can disable International Roaming for each Telstra service independently however this will not prevent charges from being incurred if Voicemail/MessageBank is used for any of your Telstra numbers.

To ensure no costs are incurred by temporarily switching off or removing a service on eSIM from your device, refer to the instructions for dual SIM number management from your device manufacturer, including Apple, Samsung and Google. This should be done before you leave Australia.

Avoid unwanted Roaming costs

To avoid any unwanted International Roaming costs we recommend you do the following:

To avoid all Roaming charges

  • Disable International Roaming and Day Pass, or remove your SIM before your travel abroad.

If you wish to maintain International Roaming, the following may trigger roaming charges

  • If you are using a dual-SIM or eSIM, please ensure International Roaming is disabled on the secondary (unused) services.

You will incur International Roaming charges when using call forwarding / MessageBank

  • When someone calls you and leaves a Voicemail/MessageBank message
  • When you call and listen to your Voicemail/MessageBank messages
  • If you use SMS to have your Voicemail/MessageBank call you

To avoid these potential unwanted costs please do the following

  • Set unconditional diversion to Voicemail/MessageBank in phone settings (you can still make calls and retrieve Voicemail while roaming, but these will be charged at standard roaming rates as per your plan). You will not be able to receive any phone calls while unconditional diversions are in place.
  • Disabling international roaming or removing your SIM after you have begun travelling may still incur roaming charges if:
  • Someone calls and leaves a Voicemail/MessageBank message (if call forwarding unconditional diversion has not been setup in your phone settings beforehand)

See here for more information about forward ing calls to your mobile.

FAQs

Day and Month passes are available for your team while travelling for work. Rates for Small Business customers can be found at small business international roaming day pass. If you’re an Enterprise customer, visit business enterprise international roaming day pass.

You can activate your International Roaming Day Pass in the My Telstra App. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the My Telstra App
  2. Go to Services
  3. Select your Mobile service
  4. Tap on Extras
  5. Go to International Roaming
  6. Scroll down to International Roaming Day Pass and toggle it on.

Your Day Pass takes between 15 minutes and 2 hours to activate and you'll receive a text once it's active.
Day Pass charges apply when your service is used in eligible destinations to make or receive calls, send SMS, or for data use, including data such as downloading emails or updating your socials.

There are two ways to check whether you're on an Upfront Plan or not.

Check your Telstra account number

If your account number starts with '2000', you're not on an Upfront Plan. You can find your account number on your Telstra bill or in 'Payments' tab in the My Telstra App.

Check your International Roaming settings in the My Telstra App

If you're on an Upfront Plan, you will only have the International Roaming Day Pass option. If you also see a Pay-As-You-Go option, you're not on an Upfront Plan, because PAYG isn't available on Upfront Plans.

Here's how you get to your International Roaming settings:

  • Open the My Telstra App
  • Go to Services
  • Select your Mobile service
  • Tap on Extras
  • Go to International Roaming

If you’re on an Upfront plan

If you’re on an Upfront plan and your destination isn’t included in the International Roaming Day Pass, you’ll need to connect to local Wi-Fi or purchase a local carrier SIM card to use your phone overseas.

You won’t be charged any Pay-As-You-Go rates to use your phone overseas.

If you’re on any other Telstra plan

If you’re on any other Telstra mobile plan and your destination isn’t included in the International Roaming Day Pass, you’ll be charged pay-As-You-Go rates to use your phone in that destination.

You also have the option to not use the International Roaming Day Pass while in countries that are included in a Day Pass and to be charged on a Pay-As-You-Go basis instead, however this will be far more expensive, and it is not recommended, please read the rates below.

The rates for each country will vary and once you arrive in your destination, we’ll send you an SMS with the rates that apply.

If you don't want to Pay-As-You-Go, you can disable International Roaming in the My Telstra App by selecting your service, go to 'International Roaming' and select 'Manage'.

Here is how you can check whether you'll be charged Pay-As-You-Go rates:

  1. Open the My Telstra App
  2. Go to Services
  3. Select your Mobile service
  4. Tap on Extras
  5. Go to International Roaming

If you only have a Day Pass toggle available, you're on an Upfront Plan and won't be charged Pay-As-You-Go rates. If you also see an International Roaming toggle and it's enabled, you will be charged Pay-As-You-Go rates if you visit a country that's not eligible for Day Pass.

Yes, you can access MessageBank via the SMS Call Back function.

To access, text “M” to +61101 - this is a free SMS.

You can make calls, send messages and use data while overseas. Voice calling may also depend on your mobile plan, device compatibility and network coverage in the area where you are attempting to make a call. Check with your device manufacturer to ensure compatibility for your specific device. VoLTE calls are also only possible in countries where we have an agreement with our roaming partner to use VoLTE.

If you can't make calls with your Non-VoLTE capable device you may be able to manually select a 3G/2G network via your device settings (if such a network is available). Check the instructions below on how to do this on some popular devices.

To select a network manually on other devices or a different software version, check with your device manufacturer.

Non-VoLTE compatible devices may also be able to use OTT (Over The Top) calling apps or Wi-Fi calling for voice calls to Australia.
