Proxy Cache Decommissioning Information

Background

A Proxy Cache is a server which stores a local copy of web and ftp information to avoid repeated retrievals of the same information from the original source, which is often an overseas web site.

The Proxy Cache server farms were built by Telstra across Australia to enhance the backbone network performance, conserve Internet bandwidth and reduce latency for the Internet users.

With the emerging new technologies, the backbone network performance has increased many times over and so these servers are now redundant.  Telstra has marked Proxy Cache (servers) for decommissioning.

This will not have any effect on the internet access and its performance for Telstra Customers. The steps below provide information on detaching the customer systems of Proxy Cache settings configured earlier.

Web Proxy Auto Discovery Protocol

Currently, the customers whose browsers support the Web Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) protocol must be using the DNS name wpad.cache.telstra.net in the suppliers DNS field.

This DNS name has to be deleted from the supplier WPAD field to disable the proxy settings.
