Internet Direct

Equipment

Telstra can provide you with a range of customer equipment packages for use with your Telstra Internet Direct service. Three package types are available, catering for different pricing and maintenance requirements:

See the Equipment Pricing section of our website and Our Customer Terms for more detailed pricing information.

Managed Package

The Managed package includes the Cisco 857 router, which is pre-configured to connect to the Telstra Internet Direct network. This package is provided to you with standard security features such as access control lists (ACLs), Network Address Translation (NAT). Additional features such as stateful firewall, IPSec tunnelling, and generic routing encapsulation (GRE) can also be activated.

If you purchase the Managed package then you are choosing our configuration and installation service, with the option of ongoing maintenance. If you take up the maintenance option, you may choose to cancel your maintenance should your circumstances or provider change. Maintenance options are provided below.

Advanced Package

Advanced package offers the same choice of routers as the Basic package, except that the router is provided to you with advanced security features such as a stateful firewall, IPSec tunnelling, and generic routing encapsulation (GRE) in addition to the standard security features.

You will need to install the router (Telstra does not provide installation with this package) and you will need to contact Cisco directly for any maintenance issues.

Note: If using a Cisco 857 router for ADSL carriage into your Internet Direct service, then you will receive the advanced security features with your basic package.

Basic Package

The Basic package enables you to purchase a choice of Cisco 800, 1800 and 2800 series routers. The router will be provided to you with the default Cisco provided configuration and standard security features such as access control lists (ACLs) and Network Address Translation (NAT). The Basic package is not recommended if you intend to deploy an IPSec VPN or intrusion detection system.

You will need to install the router (Telstra does not provide installation with this package) and you will need to contact Cisco directly for any maintenance issues.

Note: If using a Cisco 857 router for ADSL carriage into your Internet Direct service, then you will receive the advanced security features with your basic package.

The following table outlines the router packages that are available, and which Telstra data access method they can be used with to connect to Telstra Internet Direct. Detailed information including router specifications and technical documentation is available from the Cisco Systems website - simply click on the router you are interested in.

Except for the Managed package, the equipment will be delivered to you with a default vendor configuration. This provides you with the flexibility to customise the router configuration with the functionality and security that best meets your business needs.

Maintenance

If you select a Managed package, you will be provided with the following choice of maintenance options.

  1. The standard maintenance provided with the Telstra Internet Direct Cisco 857 router extends the responsibility for service availability from the NTU to the Ethernet port on the Cisco router. Standard maintenance provides for 24 hour fault reporting with 2-hour response, although if physical replacement or intervention is required, this will be performed within two business days.
  2. An extended maintenance option is available which provides 24-hour, 7 days a week support and equipment replacement within 24 hours (excluding regional areas). Additional charges apply.

Maintenance includes the following:

  • Hardware maintenance of the router and supplied cables.
  • Maintenance of the router software.
  • Changes to software configuration as required to ensure continued operation with the Telstra Internet Direct service. (Note: Changes to software configuration means that from time to time, Telstra may need to update the existing configuration on your router to ensure continued operation. This may be due to changes within Telstra's network, or to changes as advised by the vendor). The maintenance feature does not include Customer requests to make changes to software configurations.
  • Additions and deletions of routed Internet addresses as required.
  • At your request, SNMP read only access, NAT and DHCP, and changes to their configuration.

Maintenance does not include:

  • Pro-active monitoring of router availability or performance.
  • Upgrade of the router software to a version not supported by Telstra Internet Direct - maintenance does not extend to cover such an upgrade, and we will not provide ongoing support for the router software.

Similarly, Telstra supplied maintenance of the router does not allow:

  • Configurations other than the standard configuration.
  • For you to modify the configuration via SNMP, Console Port or other means.
  • Access to the configuration of the router software, nor information relating to that configuration, excluding NAT and DHCP configuration.

Standard configuration consists of connectivity to the Telstra Internet Direct network. The only additions that can be made are Network Address Translation (NAT), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and read only SNMP access.

Standard maintenance hours are 8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. You may elect to pay for extended maintenance for the router. The extended hours of maintenance coverage are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including public holidays.
